SHOP RULES 11-23-90 FROM: The Dean's Office TO: All Campus Machine Shops, Buildings & Grounds SUBJECT: Production and Safety These guidelines are intended to increase productivity and reduce the number of accidents during the coming year. 1) When changing cutting tools, turn off the machine. This is both faster and safer. 2) Large ultrasonic cleaning machines shall not be used for bathing. Showers, while requiring soap and a little more effort, are much safer. 3) No more wire will be machined from bar stock. 4) Attention must be paid to all prints and drawings. Note that they have two sides; use the side with the brighter image on it. 5) Charging of automotive batteries from the AC line will not be done unless a battery charger is used. 6) The sharp end of the drill should face the work. Not only will this one step reduce the number of drills broken, but the work will go faster as well. 7) All shipping addresses will appear on the OUTSIDE of the container. 8) When using cutting oil, a cutting tool must be used as well. The oil will not do the job alone. 9) Dimensions in meters and millimeters may not be interchanged, unless the decimal point is moved accordingly. 10) When using hand-held electric drills, hold securely by handle. Longer extension cords will not work. 11) The practice of using micrometers as C clamps will be discontinued. 12) Work that has just been heat treated or welded should not be touched until the red color disappears. 13) The inclusion of fish to relatives in production orders will be discontinued. 14) When using welding helmets, the dark glass window shoud face toward the front of the head, not to the rear. 15) Duelling with fork lifts will be discontinued immediately.
