New Volkswagen Owner Notes

As the co-operator of a 1999 New Beetle, I have figured out a few things that might be of interest to other drivers.

1. A loose gastank cap can lead to an engine warning light. The cap must be tightly affixed. It is best to turn it until you hear it click 2-4 times.
2. A persistent engine warning light is a sign of a problem. Sometimes the light will go off on its own. After up to 15 times of starting the vehicle your VW might decide finally that the problem does not exist. Do not be in a rush to take your car in for service if the light is not blinking. Just to diagnose your car the dealer ship will charge you $100 - even if its just the gas cap.
3. A blinking light, is a sign of a major problem. Do not drive the car. Turn it off immeadiately and have it towed to a service station. However, it also might mean you ran out of gas.
